We’ve had an overpriced and flawed electric ute, and a regular hybrid ute, but the BYD Shark 6 steps into Australia as the segment’s first plug-in hybrid dual-cab. And it looks incredible value with a $57,900 RRP sticker, with plenty of standard equipment, too, to make the equivalent Ford Ranger or Toyota HiLux look expensive in comparison. The Shark 6 is also more powerful and faster than a Ranger Raptor, with a combined 321kW and 650Nm produced from its dual electric motors and turbocharged petrol engine. Those electric motors are fed by a 29.6kWh battery that’s integrated into the middle of a ladderframe chassis, and while the Shark mirrors most rivals with an independent (double-wishbone) front suspension, the rear suspension eschews segment convention by also being independent with double A-arms again. In this full review, Chasing Cars’ Jez Spinks and Evan Spence test the BYD Shark 6 on road and off road, confirm whether it’s as quick as it claims, and calculate real-world fuel consumption.
