An overdose prevention center (OPC), also known as a supervised consumption site, is a designated space where individuals can use pre-obtained drugs in a controlled and hygienic environment. The primary purpose of these centers is to prevent overdose deaths by providing immediate intervention from trained staff who can respond to overdose situations effectively. OPCs are part of a broader harm reduction strategy to address the drug overdose crisis, diverting public drug use and reducing the transmission of HIV and hepatitis. OPCs reduce the harms that people who use drugs face by providing sterile supplies, overdose response services, and, in many cases, wraparound health care and social support. OPCs are one type of evidence-based harm reduction strategy to reduce fatal overdose and other harms associated with drug use.
