London Walk - 4K - Westminster Bridge to Tower Bridge via the South Bank of the Thames - Summer 2024

Wandering along the 'South Bank' of the river Thames, following a portion of 'The Queens Walk' and the 'Thames Path' on a warm summer's day in London, United Kingdom. This day happened to be the day of London's yearly 'Pride' parade, as well as being the last weekend before the recent 'General Election' here in the United Kingdom. Plenty of interesting characters along the way! The walk starts at a viewing spot on the south side of Westminster Bridge that is perfect for catching an unobstructed view of the Houses of Parliament and Big Ben on the other side of the river. We then head off along the 'South Bank' of the Thames, past the many points of interest along the way, until finally ending up at the iconic 'Tower Bridge'. First up is the County Hall building, which now houses several tourist attractions such as the London Aquarium. Next comes the iconic massive 'London Eye' Ferris wheel. Then we pass through the South Bank's world-class arts and entertainment district, passing first the Royal Festival Hall, followed by the Queen Elizabeth Hall and the Hayward Gallery, the BFI Southbank, and then finally the National Theatre. Some of the worlds best performances can be seen in these halls. Along the way the path passes Waterloo Bridge, and then Blackfriars Bridge and the Millennium Footbridge. The Millennium footbridge leads pedestrians across the river to London's loved St. Pauls Cathedral on the north bank of the Thames, and to the massive and iconic 'Tate Modern' modern art gallery for those crossing in the opposite direction. Both can be seen in all their glory as you follow the path past. Next the path passes the amazing faithful recreation of Shakespeare's 'Globe' theatre, then under Southwark Bridge, past the 'Clink' prison museum and the ruins of the medieval 'Winchester Palace', before passing under the Canon Street Railway Bridge. Following that the path takes you past a life-size working replica of Sir Frances Drake's ship 'The Golden Hinde', built in the style of a 16th century sailing ship that travelled around the world, and then towering spire of 'Southwark Cathedral'. Beyond, the path passes then under the real 'London Bridge', and then past the revered HMS Belfast, a World War II era 'Light Cruiser' warship of the Royal Navy now turned into a museum for those of interest. We then reach the final point of interest and the grand finale of our journey, London's most recognizable and much loved landmark, Tower Bridge.
