Trump Slashes IVF Costs After Deal With Merck | Fertility Drugs to Drop 80% | US News

U.S. President Donald Trump said on Thursday (October 16) costs of in vitro fertilization medications and treatment will be slashed. Speaking at an Oval Office event, Trump said the move follows an agreement with Germany's Merck KGaA U.S. unit EMD Serono to provide steep discounts on fertility drugs including Gonal-f, Ovidrel and Cetrotide. Merck said it would sell the medicines directly to consumers at significantly reduced prices in exchange for potential tariff relief tied to future U.S. manufacturing and research investments. Merck said patients using all three therapies in an IVF cycle would receive an 84% discount off list prices. The company said the discounted products will be available in early 2026 through TrumpRX, a government website the administration plans to launch to let consumers buy some medicines directly from manufacturers. Trump said prices would be listed at "very heavily reduced" levels and that future products would be offered at "most‑favored‑nation" pricing. The company plans to seek U.S. approval for its fertility drug Pergoveris under the Food and Drug Administration Commissioner's new National Priority Voucher program, which is intended to shorten review times to one to two months from about 10–12 months. Trump said the rival therapy would compete with a more expensive option that he said currently has a de facto monopoly in the U.S. market. Trump also said the administration would expand access to insurance coverage for fertility care, allowing employers to offer a standalone fertility benefit. Trump said the per‑cycle cost of IVF drugs would fall by an estimated 73% as the measures take effect. IVF involves combining eggs and sperm in a laboratory dish to create an embryo for couples having difficulty conceiving. The costs for IVF can range from $12,000 to $25,000 per cycle and multiple cycles may be needed to get pregnant. Merck KGaA is one of the world's largest manufacturers of fertility treatments.
