This PlayStation 5 was dropped in by customer, they said that originally it would turn off every so often and overheat and then eventually it stopped turning on altogether. I took it apart and tested the power supply which seem to be working just fine. I then plugged it into a desktop supply and saw that the board was taking 0amps, so was not doing anything at all to try and boot. I checked all of the power rails and 12 V and 5 V were there but there was no 3.3 V present 3.3 V is required for the Power Button to work and for the bios to work as well as the Southbridge. I found a 13 ohm short to ground on the 3.3 V rail, which was a bit of a hard one to find at first as with the multimeter in continuity mode there was no beep, but when I plugged my programer in it turned itself off, which made me think there was some kind of weirdness going on. So I retested the 3.3 V rail with the multimeter this time in resistance mode and saw that there was a 13 ohm short to ground. So I injected 3.3 V into the rail and looked under the thermal camera to see what was heating up. I found a shorted capacitor on the other side of the board and remove this which brought the board back to life again. I then replaced the capacity and cleaned all of the console up and put it all back together ready for the customer to collect.
