HMAS Sydney (II) action with HSK Kormoran

In November 1941, HMAS Sydney (II) intercepted a suspicious vessel operating in waters off the Western Australian coast. The vessel proved to be the cleverly disguised and battle-hardened German auxiliary cruiser Kormoran. When interrogated and ordered to reveal her secret call-sign the Kormoran shed its camouflage and opened fire on Sydney at close range. As a result of the ensuing action Sydney was to sink, hours later, with the loss of all hands, while Kormoran was forced to scuttle.
