The Founding Of Sansepolcro The founding of Sansepolcro is mostly legend. No one knows if it is really true, but it could be. As the story goes, Sansepolcro was founded by two pilgrims, Egidio and Aranco, who were on their way back from the Holy Land. They had a dream which they believed was a message from God. They were told to build a church and the town began there. Sansepolcro was originally Santo Sepolcro, which means Holy Sepulchure. Egidio and Aranco are carved on to the doors of Sansepolcro’s cathedral. During Roman times, Sansepolcro was a Roman colony. In the twelfth century, it had only six streets. Sansepolcro is located in Tuscany, but is close to Umbria and Marche. Because of its position, it's ownership was continually changing. It was owned by many powerful families during different time periods. In 1441, the city was sold by it's owner to Florence, so it became a permanent part of Tuscany. Sansepolcro natives are extremely proud of their Tuscan heritage. Sansepolcro became part of Italy when the Italian state was unified on September 20 of 1870, which is why the street I live on is called Via XX Settembre, or September 20th. Roman & Etruscan History Sansepolcro is considered to exist in an area of Italy which was historically populated by Etruscans, whose main cities were Perugia, Cortona and Arezzo, which are all located within a 60km radius of Sansepolcro. The Upper Tiber valley was covered in walnut trees, which were useful to both Etruscans and Romans as a supply of wood. The Romans succeeded the Etruscans in a war that dates back thousands of years ago and Birtugia, a Roman camp, was built where Sansepolcro is situated today. A number of Romans, including Pliny the Younger, build their summer villas in the Valtiberina, and Pliny praises the climate and the health of the natives in a famous letter. Today, in Sansepolcro, you wouldn't be able to tell that the Birtugia camp was located here, because the camp was temporary. They used tents instead of building houses. If they had, we would have been able to see the geological structures left behind by time over thousands of years. Because of this, some historians wonder if the camp had ever even existed. If it had, the people who lived there are long lost relatives of the wonderful citizens of Sansepolcro that I call friends. The "Palio della Balestra" Festival Sansepolcro isn't a well known city. It is very very small. However, what Sansepolcro is known for the works of Piero della Francesca and the Palio della Balestra (crossbow tournament) held every year on the second Sunday of September. This is when large numbers of citizens dress in medieval costume and the Piazza Torre di Berta becomes the site for the historical competition of the crossbow tournament. The "Palio of the Ballestra" is when the crossbow-men of Sansepolcro challenge those from Gubbio in the neighboring Bella Umbria. In the morning, as the ancient custom requires, the Herald announces the challenge against the rivals. In the afternoon, after the crossbows are blessed, the crossbow-men come into the square after the flag-throwing exercise. During the tournament, Renaissance costumes are worn, inspired by the paintings of Piero della Francesca. The challenge between the towns of Gubbio and Sansepolcro has a very ancient origin: in a document dated 1619, the crossbow-men of Sansepolcro invite those from Gubbio to take part in the Palio of Saint Egidio on the second Sunday of September. *The structure of this paragraph came from a previously written blog created by a Meredith College student.* /:; /:/ Country Italy Region Tuscany Province Arezzo (AR) Frazioni Aboca, Gragnano, Gricignano, Melello, Montagna, Santa Fiora Government • Mayor Fabrizio Innocenti Area[1] • Total 91.48 km2 (35.32 sq mi) Elevation 330 m (1,080 ft) Population (31 December 2014)[2] • Total 16,012 • Density 180/km2 (450/sq mi) Demonym Biturgensi - Borghesi Time zone UTC+1 (CET) • Summer (DST) UTC+2 (CEST) Postal code 52037 Dialing code 0575 Patron saint St. John the Evangelist Saint day December 27 Website www.comune.sansepolcro.ar.it Province: Province of Arezzo Population: 15,907 (2017) Istat Postal code: 52037 Elevation: 330 m (1,080 ft) #2024 #youtube #youtubeshot #aatenumatchdikhawan #boxinggear #boxingshorts #boxingviral #entertainment #festival #sansepolcro #boxinggear #travel
