Sunday 5 PM Tropical Update: TD 3 forms in Gulf as Beryl races toward the Caribbean

Beryl is the first major hurricane of the Atlantic hurricane season. It became a hurricane on Saturday afternoon and has now strengthened to a Category 4 on Sunday. With little wind shear and record-warm ocean temperatures, strengthening has happened quickly. Beryl is the strongest June hurricane on record in the Atlantic basin and the earliest Category 4 on record in the Atlantic basin. It is moving quickly toward the eastern Caribbean islands. On Monday, the Windward Islands will experience serious impacts, such as heavy rain, damaging winds, and potentially dangerous storm surge and flooding. Beryl is expected to ride along a ridge of high pressure, which will keep it heading westward in the next few days. It will move west-northwestward through the Caribbean Sea this upcoming week. By late this week, wind shear may increase in the western Caribbean Sea, likely causing the storm to weaken. It may be somewhere around Yucatan or the southern Gulf of Mexico by next weekend. It appears high pressure over the southeast US next weekend could keep Beryl on a westward track away from the northern Gulf Coast. This set-up could send it into Mexico or perhaps southern Texas. We have lots of time to watch it, and we'll continue to track it all week. Aside from Beryl... a new tropical depression formed in the southwestern Gulf of Mexico on Sunday afternoon. This one is forecast to briefly become a tropical storm before moving into Mexico early Monday. And another area of possible tropical development is following right behind Beryl in the Atlantic. This will be something to watch in the long-term. The next names on the list are Chris and then Debby.
