A Study of Secondary Cytoreductive Therapy in Platinum-Sensitive Ovarian Cancer

Jalid Sehouli, MD, professor, director of the Clinic Campus Virchow and Campus Benjamin Franklin Charité Center Gynecology, Charité – Universitatsmedizin Berlin, discusses a randomized controlled phase II study to evaluate secondary cytoreductive surgery in patients with platinum-sensitive recurrent ovarian cancer. In this randomized trial, patients with platinum-sensitive ovarian cancer were randomized to surgery followed by chemotherapy or chemotherapy alone. The interim analysis showed a clear significant benefit in progression-free survival with surgery followed by chemotherapy. Investigators are now waiting for overall survival data, which they hope will be mature by 2019. Sehouli says these results suggest that patients with platinum-sensitive ovarian cancer should be offered secondary surgery in combination with chemotherapy.
