My birthday weekend exploring the Garden of the Gods recreation area and Shawnee National Forest.

This self led therapy session took us to an area I had never thought to explore until recently. We adventured into southern Illinois to the Shawnee National Forest. The Shawnee NF is an amazing place with a lot of hiking trails and some pretty spectacular scenery. I never thought I'd say I want to go to Illinois to camp, but I really want to make a few more trips back there again. The area of the Shawnee NF is separated from the Ozarks by the Mississippi river and is part of a geologically distinct area known as the Shawnee hills. Glaciers never made it down to the southern tip of Illinois and that's why the landscape is different here.
