Q11. What are the decrees of God? — A Baptist Body of Divinity

A. The decrees of God are His eternal purpose, according to the counsel of His will, whereby for His own glory, He has fore-ordained whatsoever comes to pass (Eph. 1:11; Rom. 11:36; Dan. 4:35)  — FOUR POINTS OF INSTRUCTION — I. GOD HAS AN ETERNAL PURPOSE “The decrees of God are His eternal purpose” Ephesians 3:11 “This was according to the eternal purpose that He has realized in Christ Jesus our Lord,” II. GOD WORKS ALL THINGS ACCORDING TO HIS WILL “according to the counsel of His will” Ephesians 1:11 “In him we have obtained an inheritance, having been predestined according to the purpose of him who works all things according to the counsel of his will,” I) GOD WORKS ALL SMALL THINGS ACCORDING TO HIS WILL Proverbs 16:33 “The lot is cast into the lap, but its every decision is from the Lord.” II) GOD WORKS ALL LARGE THINGS ACCORDING TO HIS WILL Daniel 2:20-21 “20 Daniel answered and said: “Blessed be the name of God forever and ever, to whom belong wisdom and might. 21 He changes times and seasons; he removes kings and sets up kings;” III. GOD CREATED AND GOVERNS ALL THINGS FOR HIS OWN GLORY “whereby for His own glory” Proverbs 16:4 "The Lord has made all things for himself." IV. GOD HAS FOR-ORDAINED WHATSOEVER COMES TO PASS “He has fore-ordained whatsoever comes to pass.” Acts 2:23 “this Jesus, delivered up according to the definite plan and foreknowledge of God, you crucified and killed by the hands of lawless men.“ In Chapter 3 of the 1689 Baptist Confession of Faith, it says this: "1. From all eternity God decreed everything that occurs, without reference to anything outside himself.1  He did this by the perfectly wise and holy counsel of his own will, freely and unchangeably. Yet God did this in such a way that he is neither the author of sin nor has fellowship with any in their sin.2  This decree does not violate the will of the creature or take away the free working or contingency of second causes. On the contrary, these are established by God’s decree.3  In this decree God’s wisdom is displayed in directing all things, and his power and faithfulness are demonstrated in accomplishing his decree.4 1Is. 46:10;Eph.1:11;Heb.6:17;Rom.9:15,18.2Jms.1:13;1Jhn.1:5.3Acts4:27-28;Jhn19:11.4Num.23:19;Eph.1:3–5." — SIX POINTS OF APPLICATION — I. GOD’S ETERNAL DECREE DOES NOT MEAN YOU ARE OFF THE HOOK FOR YOUR ACTIONS—GOD IS SOVEREIGN AND YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE I) You are responsible for your actions and God does not judge on a curve Galatians 6:7 “Do not be deceived: God is not mocked, for whatever one sows, that will he also reap.” II) You must be reconciled to God through repentance and faith in Christ Jesus Acts 3:19 “Repent therefore, and turn back, that your sins may be blotted out,” III) In Christ, you must work out your own sanctification as you beat your body into submission and make it your slave Philippians 2:12b-13 “12b work out your own salvation with fear and trembling, 13 for it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure.” 1 Corinthians 9:27 “I discipline my body and keep it under control,” 1 Corinthians 15:10 “But by the grace of God I am what I am, and his grace toward me was not in vain. On the contrary, I worked harder than any of them, though it was not I, but the grace of God that is with me.” IV) In Christ, you must continue in the faith all the way until you death Colossians 1:22-23 “22 has now reconciled in his body of flesh by his death, in order to present you holy and blameless and above reproach before him, 23 if indeed you continue in the faith...not shifting from the hope of the gospel that you heard” V) In Christ, God must make all things work for His glory and your good, because He has decreed it Romans 8:28-30 “28 And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose. 29 For those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, in order that he might be the firstborn among many brothers. 30 And those whom he predestined he also called, and those whom he called he also justified, and those whom he justified he also glorified.” VI) In Christ, God’s revelation concerning His eternal decrees should not lead you to speculate. God’s revelation concerning His eternal decrees should lead to sing! Romans 11:36 “Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are his judgments and how inscrutable his ways! "For who has known the mind of the Lord, or who has been his counselor?" "Or who has given a gift to him that he might be repaid?" For from him and through him and to him are all things. To him be glory forever. Amen.”
