Two surgeries in exactly 2 weeks almost killed me. I still have a hard time talking about my near-death experience because it was so traumatic. This sugar-coated version explains what happened for the most part, but I did not go into detail about how severe the stomach pain actually was. Thankfully, I have a very high pain tolerance and struggled with debilitating pain for days after my appendix ruptured unbeknownst to me, way before I barely made it to the hospital! Keep in mind I had just come out of a successful spine surgery a week and a half prior so my main focus was recovering from that injury. After arriving to the ER physically and uncontrollably shaking with a fever of 102 my heart rate was through the roof. While seated in a wheelchair and projectile vomiting, they finally took me in to see one of the doctors and performed an ultrasound but found nothing. Much later I had more imaging done, but the CT scan results took 6 hours to receive. At this point it's 2:30 am (on the 4th of July) and I've been in the ER for almost 12 hours now, unable to drink any water. Sure they had me hooked up to fluids but I drink 2.5 gallons of water day and felt so dehydrated from vomiting for hours, plus my fever was not going down, even after all the Tylenol and pain meds they pumped me with. They wouldn't let me into a hospital bed until my health insurance approved it of course, so now it's 5 am before I get wheeled into a room. The intake nurse has to fill out all the administrative work which was another hour of me answering medical questions. I haven't slept yet and felt like I was on another planet. The next thing I know some other doctor (not the surgeon) comes in making jokes that I really did not need to hear. I desperately needed sleep after being drugged with so many medications. The surgeon eventually called me and said he would perform the procedure in a few hours. I never met him until right before the operation and it was not a good first impression. I felt so scared, alone and lost, not knowing what the hell is going on, and he threatens me by saying he won't take out my ruptured appendix 5 minutes before I'm about to go under. It was not very reassuring that I was going to be ok. I think he was more upset and resentful that I ruined his holiday. He didn't even stick around after completing the surgery to tell me how it went or what happened! Totally unprofessional! I asked all the nurses but they could not disclose that information. I never found out it had ruptured and was decomposed until the next day when the bitter surgeon called me to deliver the results and all he could say was that 'it was really bad" no other explanation was given to me as I'm crying on the phone asking for answers. It gets much worse over the next couple days. The procedures performed by a physician's assistant (PA) within the hospital caused my pain to intensify tremendously. I had a drain (that you'll see in the video) that the PA increased suction on after I told all the nurses how much pain it was causing and her response of action was to give me more pain meds. I was crying, pleading and begging her to reduce the drain's suction because I couldn't even sit up to get out of the hospital bed on my own. Like I mentioned in the video, I wasn't allowed any liquid foods or water for days, and I hadn't slept any of the nights I stayed in that miserable prison. So for an entire week, the only source of nutrition I had (but puked) was a protein shake. The way I was treated was inhumane and the suffering I endured should not take place in a so called healing environment. There was no intention of helping me recover in that hospital which is why I demanded they discharge me. You know how they wheel you out of the hospital for liability reasons? I HAD to be physically wheeled out of that hospital because I still couldn't walk due to the stomach pain, never mind my back had been getting worse from laying on a hard hospital bed for 4 days. Being restricted movement to a 5 foot radius from the IV drip machine not allowing me to go anywhere except the restroom didn't help either. I had the drain in for a week post-op and had to measure my bodily fluids daily. It got so much worse over the next 6 weeks because the naval incision was infected and constantly discharged green puss and other liquids for weeks. Bodily functions that so many people take for granted, like going to the bathroom (#1 and #2), weren't possible without medications. I ended up back in the ER because the NP told me it could be an abscess which is very common after this type of surgery. All the while having to go back in for check-ups from both surgeries when I wasn't allowed to drive for 6 weeks due to the spine surgery. There was no bending lifting or twisting during this devastating time so it was extremely hard to get around! Overall the most traumatic experience of my life! I'm beyond grateful to be alive and cherish my health more than ever. Ripped Vixen
