In AD 43, the Roman invasion of Britain marked the beginning of nearly four centuries of Roman rule on the island. Led by Aulus Plautius and backed by four legions, the campaign brought southern Britain firmly into the orbit of the Roman Empire. But while Britain was being conquered, the wider Roman world was not standing still. This video is part of my Empire in Context series, where I explore Roman Britain through the lens of the wider empire. Instead of focusing only on events in Britain, this series asks a bigger question: what else was happening across the Roman world at the same time? In AD 43, Emperor Claudius was consolidating his rule, reshaping the political elite of the empire, expanding Romeβs infrastructure, and securing its frontiers. From massive building projects in Italy, to the reorganisation of North Africa, to the growth of Rome itself into the largest city in the Mediterranean world, this was a period of confidence, stability, and expansion. Seen in that context, the invasion of Britain was not an isolated adventure, but part of a much larger imperial system operating across three continents. What Youβll Learn Today In this video, youβll discover: β What the Roman Empire looked like in AD 43 beyond Britain β How Emperor Claudius was consolidating power and reshaping Romeβs ruling elite β Why Rome was investing heavily in infrastructure and monumental building projects β How North Africa and the western Mediterranean fitted into Romeβs imperial strategy β And why the conquest of Britain makes more sense when viewed as part of a stable, confident, and expanding empire Empire in Context is a mid-week series on Robβs Roman Britain that explores major moments in British history alongside what was happening across the wider Roman world at the same time. The aim is to place Britain back into its true historical setting: not as an isolated frontier, but as one province within a vast and interconnected empire. #RomanEmpire #AD43 #RomanBritain #Claudius #RomanHistory #AncientRome #EmpireInContext #RomanInvasion #romanempire Channel logo kindly provided by Peter Hamilton Credit for other images used in video: Marie-Lan Nguyen - Bust of Emperor Claudius All these images are available under the following licences: https://creativecommons.org/licenses/... https://creativecommons.org/licenses/... https://creativecommons.org/licenses/... https://creativecommons.org/licenses/...
