BACnet IP is an implementation of BACnet protocol using IP. Use of IP allows BACnet IP devices to span across multiple physical and logical IP Subnets. BACnet IP uses UDP protocol. BACnet IP device address consist of IP address and UDP port. Also each BACnet device have a device instance id which shall be unique over complete BACnet Internetwork. BACnet IP devices can span across multiple IP physical or logical subnets. BACnet uses broadcast message to discover devices and objects. IP routers don't allow broadcast messages to pass, so BACnet Broadcast Message Device or BBMD devices are used in each IP subnet. BBMD allow BACnet broadcast messages to pass to the other IP subnets.
