Nina had been competing in gymnastics for years while enduring shin pain. At a visit to the orthopedic doctor, they discovered she had tibial stress fractures requiring immediate surgery. The x-rays showed that Nina had been chronically breaking her legs and allowing them to heal over time. Now Nina faced a difficult choice, to undergo a complex surgery or end her promising gymnastics career. The orthopedic surgeons at UCHealth understood that bringing Nina back to the high level of competitive gymnastics was going to be a challenge. The surgery would involve inserting rods through the center of Nina's tibia in both legs. Nina decided to proceed with the surgery and made a remarkable recovery.
