Who Was Franz Ziereis? Full Name: Franz Xaver Ziereis Born: August 13, 1905, in Munich, Germany Died: May 24, 1945 (aged 39), Gusen, Austria 🟤 Early Life & Nazi Rise Ziereis joined the Reichswehr (German army) in 1924 and served until 1936. He then joined the SS (Schutzstaffel) and was assigned to the SS-Totenkopfverbände, the Death’s Head units responsible for guarding concentration camps. ⚫ Commandant of Mauthausen In 1939, Ziereis was appointed commandant of the Mauthausen-Gusen concentration camp complex in Austria. He held this position until the camp's liberation in May 1945. Under his leadership, Mauthausen became one of the most brutal camps in Nazi Germany, used primarily for extermination through labor. 🔴 Crimes & Atrocities Tens of thousands of prisoners (including Jews, political prisoners, Soviet POWs, and others) died due to torture, starvation, forced labor, and execution. Ziereis personally oversaw mass killings, including gassings, shootings, and the use of brutal punishment cells. Mauthausen’s infamous "Stairs of Death", where prisoners were forced to carry heavy stones up 186 steps, became a symbol of the camp’s inhumanity. ⚫ Capture & Death After the U.S. Army liberated Mauthausen on May 5, 1945, Ziereis fled into the mountains. He was captured by American forces on May 23, 1945 and shot while trying to escape or during interrogation (accounts vary). Ziereis died the next day from his wounds in the presence of former prisoners. His body was publicly displayed, hung on the Mauthausen camp fence as a warning and symbol of justice. 🔻 Legacy Ziereis became a symbol of Nazi cruelty and the horrors of the concentration camp system. His name is forever tied to one of the worst atrocities in history. #ww2history #history #foryou #military
