#StorySaturday Every comeback has a name. Our feature this week is Kate Bailey, DO from Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine. How I Overcame: When people ask how I overcame failing COMLEX, I struggle to give a simple answer because it wasn’t simple. It consumed everything in me for months. I created a multi-pronged strategy: · Pass the retake · Scoring over the 50th percentile on Level 2 · Networking extensively within my specialty · Utilizing tools like geographic signaling in ERAS I didn’t just rebuild my study plan. I rebuilt my confidence, my momentum, and my path forward. And it resulted in Matching Pediatric Neurology at Cleveland Clinic, realizing a dream I never thought possible after my setback. Tips from Kate: · Make a schedule you can live with · Six hours of focused studying beats 8-10 hours a day where your likelihood of burning out increases · Don’t dwell on mistakes. Learn, log it, and move on How to Review Practice Questions Effectively: · 30 seconds for what you got right with confidence · 60 seconds for what you guessed and got right · 90 seconds for what you got wrong Then log the topic and revisit it the next day. Do not go down rabbit holes. Cracks vs Gaps: · Crack: You knew the diagnosis but missed a detail. Note it and move on. · Gap: You misdiagnosed or didn’t know it. Review the criteria so it doesn’t happen again. Biggest Study Shift: Study with someone who questions everything. · When I was studying for Level 1 with a first-year, she would ask, “Why is the right answer right? Why are the wrong ones wrong?” That changed how I approached every question and my scores jumped from the 40s into the 60+s. This is why we built The Comeback Club. To tell stories like this. To remind you that your path doesn’t have to be perfect. It just has to be yours. Want to share your story?
