Inflammation as a damaging process Last week we jumped into all the good the immune system does when fighting off disease. This week we are diving into all the problems that immune system causes. Starting off with inflammation. This is the innate immune response to tissue damage or infection and it is close to my heart. How the innate immune system causes tissue damage had been the last 12 years of my life! We discuss how the non-specific nature of the innate immune system causes problems particularly when excessive or chronic. We discuss how neutrophils' bleach production leads to tissue damage and how this can contribute to diseases such as Alzheimer's disease. We also discuss how activated phagocytes can begin to phagocytose healthy cells and structures leading to tissue damage and disease. And lastly we look at how vascular immune responses can be deadly when they effect the whole body, as see in septic shock! Learning objectives Understand how neutrophil degranulation can contribute to tissue damage Explain how phagocytosis can lead to loss of health tissue Describe the deadly nature of whole body shock Understand the damaging nature of inflammation when it is chronic or excessive using Alzheimer's disease and sepsis as examples Explain how inflammation is a beneficial response normally using steroid use in head injury as an example
