VIDEO: A sunny evening at Milton Keynes Central station on the West Coast Main LIne, featuring Avanti West Coast class 221s and 390s, London Northwestern Railway class 319s and 350s, GBRf class 66s and Freightliner class 66s, 70s and 90s. Milton Keynes Central station was first opened on May 14, 1982, by British Rail, and serves as the principal station for the city and urban area of Milton Keynes. The station's development came, in conjunction, with the development of the area into the largest 'new town' outside of London. Prior to the station's opening, long-distance express trains between London Euston and the north-west would stop at Bletchley (opened since 1838), serving the neighbouring town to the south. However, due to its location, it wasn't adequate for properly serving the area and thus a more central station was proposed. The station initially had four through platforms and a single bay platform for terminating trains. However, in 2006, the station underwent several upgrades, coinciding with the upgrade of the West Coast Main Line. Platform 1 (the former bay platform) became a through platform, now acting as the new up slow line for passenger and freight trains, thus allowing platform 2 to become a terminating / reversing platform. A new bay platform (platform 2A) was built in order to serve the eventual extension of the Marston Vale Line from Bletchley to Milton Keynes, thus providing a direct line between Milton Keynes and Bedford (though this never happened). A new down fast line with a new platform (platform 6) for express trains to either stop or pass through. This work would be completed by the end of 2008. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- THANKS FOR WATCHING!
