On my second day in Zermatt, the Matterhorn stayed hidden in the clouds as rain fell steadily—a day for a different kind of adventure. I decided to explore Gorner Gorge on Zermatt’s southern edge. Walking along the wooden walkway suspended over the gorge, I enjoyed the sight of turquoise water rushing below and the stunning fall foliage all around. From there, I took a long walk back to Zermatt through Winkelmatten village. Next, I finally visited the Matterhorn Museum, which I’d often passed but never explored. Inside, a 19th-century Zermatt village is recreated in a large basement, complete with authentic farmhouses and huts and fascinating exhibits on the climbing history and routes of the Matterhorn. To finish the day, I strolled around town.
