(9 Mar 1995) English/Nat Europe's largest personal computer manufacturer, Vobis, is ditching America's biggest software company. Vobis is switching from Microsoft to IBM for its operating system. The announcement was made at Europe's largest computer show in Hanover and could cause shock waves throughout the industry. CeBIT, Europe's largest computer trade show is normally where the latest in hardware and software is displayed. Manufactures from around the world showcase their most exciting new developments. But this year's latest development is not a new product, but an announcement which has stunned the computer industry. Vobis Computer has said it will drop Microsoft's operating system in favour of a similar system from I-B-M. Operating systems run the basic functions of a computer, such as opening a file. Word processors and spread sheets must be written to work within operating systems. The chairman of Vobis Computer made the announcement on Wednesday, saying Microsoft's monopoly was the main reason for the change. SOUNDBITE: There is only one God in the operating system business that somebody now has also a competing operating system on the machines. For us it is normal, we are O-A-M, we are a dealer, a manufacturer and we like to have a choice of suppliers. SUPER CAPTION: Theo Lieven, CEO Vobis Computers But Vobis could still ship their personal computers with the Microsoft operating system as well as IBM's OS2. It is believed that Microsoft dominance in the market place amounts to 85-percent of operating system sales. Microsoft executives have privately expressed anger at Vobis. Bill Gates, Microsoft's CEO will be addressing the Hanover computer show later in the week. The industry will be watching for his response to the Vobis decision. The real winner in this row is IBM, as this decision will most likely increase their share of the operating system sales.
