It is true that tobacco abuse has caused major issues health issues in our society, costing more lives and money then any plant we know of. Though this effect does not make tobacco inherently negative. Nature doesn't work that way. There is no good or bad with plants. We choose the relationship we create with the world around us, it is our choices that determine the path we follow. Honouring a relationship with this plant can be a delicate dance and is not for the faint of heart. Tobacco is a plant of spiritual potency, having a rich history of being considered a teacher plant in many traditions. It is said that it can be used for connecting between the worlds, as a offering to the spirit of plants, people and everything in between. The medicine of this plant is one of communication between the veils, shrouded in the safety of a protective "smoke screen". Nicotine has a relaxation effect on the smooth muscles that has lead to its abuse and addiction by many people. Though this is actually just a byproduct of tobaccos protection mechanisms against the insects that love to feast on its tender flesh. We are not the only ones that find this plant attractive, and so it has developed may complicated defensive strategies including the production of Nicotine. That being said, this plant comes with a strong warning, "respect my gifts or they will quickly turn to imbalances" If we ignore this warning then health issues will surely arise. Though if respected this plant can be a powerful ally and gateway of spiritual connection with the world around us. In honour of our ancestors, first nations and plant teachers.
