Ovo je prvi put u filmskoj i medijskoj povijesti Hrvatske da se ekranizira najranije i po mnogočemu najzanimljivije razdoblje hrvatske povijesti – od doseljenja u 7. stoljeću pa do kraja narodne vladarske dinastije Trpimirovića (oko 1100. godine). U ovoj jedinstvenoj seriji hrvatski vladari Trpimir, Tomislav, Stjepan Držislav, Petar Krešimir IV., Zvonimir i mnogi drugi prvi put će dobiti lica i karakter. "Croatian Kings" was the biggest documentary project up to the time (2011), dealing with the earliest centuries of Croatian history. It covers the time from early 7th century (migration of Slavic tribes on the territory of present Croatia) to the early 12th century and accesion of Arpad dynasty on Croatian throne. In the center of the series' interest is so-called People's dinasty of Trpimirovic, which ruled Croatia from 9th to the beginning of 12th century. The series is richly produced, with hundreds of costumed extras and a lot of scenes of ancient battles. Many prominent European historians participated as expert commentators, first of all legend among historians, one of the greatest scholars of the European Middle ages, famous Jacques LeGoff. Rosamund McKitterick from University of Cambridge, Chris Wickham and Peter Frankopan from University of Oxford, Walter Pohl from Institute of history in Vienna, Przemyslav Urbanczyk from Univerity of Warsaw and many others, as well as best Croatian experts. Apart from political history, series also explores everyday life in early medieval Croatia, through adventures of seven Croatian peasants from medieval village of Radun in Dalmatian hinterland. For production of the series, a lot of long lost buildings of early Croatian history were reconstructed in 1:1 scale (basilica of St. Peter and Moses in Solin, in which king Zvonimir was crowned by pope's legate - the coronation is beautifuly filmed and was acclaimed by public and critics as one of strongest scenes in history of Croatian film; the tomb of kings in Our Lady's Island in Solin, basilica of Biograd, church of St. Salvation, church of St. Mary in Biskupija near Knin, which was cathedral of Croatian kings, etc). Many stone inscriptions, today in ruins or destroyed, were reconstructed in the series. For the first time in history, all three crowns of Croatian kings, lost centuries ago, were reconstructed using historical data and stone sculptures of the period.
