A POST CARD TOUR OF DOWNTOWN BATTLE CREEK My mother, Frances Thornton, began collecting Battle Creek postcards in the 1940’s. She found it a relatively cheap way to collect local history, seeing that most old postcards sold for five or ten cents a piece, she was raising a family and had limited money to spend. Over the course of her life, she collected thousands of Battle Creek cards. Her collection rivals the Stuart Lassen collection that is presently housed at Willard Library. In this program I’m going to use some of those post card images to take a tour of downtown Battle Creek so you can see how it looked in the first half of the twentieth century. I’ll try to use only the post card images to show details about some of the sights, but sometimes I’ll have to use pictures from my history collection. This is not a definitive tour of downtown, just the sites that I have post cards for.
