How to Coffee Stain Paper for Art Tutorial

  / kamakru   *** TOOLS & MATERIALS USED *** Arches 140 pound cold press watercolor paper (Alternative: Try Canson watercolor paper, or other extra heavy duty watercolor paper) Ground medium roast coffee & coffee maker (dark roast works too. Light roast will work but color may not be as dark. I do not know about any other coffee types, as I did not use anything other than brewed coffee for this.) Glass container to hold leftover brewed coffee Bowl to hold wet coffee grounds Large deep cookie sheet (Use any pan that is at least 1 inch deep and big enough to fit your paper) Wax Paper to dry the paper sheets on Paper towels *** STEP BY STEP PROCESS *** 1) Brew the coffee extra dark. I filled the coffee filter at least half way for the full pot. You need enough coffee to completely cover the paper in your pan. 2) Pour the coffee into the pan and submerge the paper, using a spoon to push it down. Break any bubbles that may have stuck to the paper. 3) For extra hot coffee, start checking the paper at the 2 minute mark. Leave in longer until desired darkness acheived. 4) Remove paper from coffee, let drip off excess liquid and place onto wax paper on flat survace. Let dry for full day or over night. DO NOT FLIP PAPER OVER. The side that touches the wax paper will be the back side. 5) Once paper is dry, add splatter using leftover coffee with a crunched up paper towel for splothced effect OR add wet coffee grounds directly to paper for gritty effect. Coffee splotches may be combined with grounds for mixed effect. May want to do splotches first, let dry and then add grounds. 6) Let dry overnight so coffee grounds are dry enough to remove. Use dry paper towel and rub off the grounds. 7) Lightly spritz the backs of each paper with a fine mist of water, stack and place cutting board on top. Stack weight on top of the cutting board until it can get no flatter. Let dry for a day/overnight or longer. Remove from under cutting board and you're ready to go! Note that the paper will always have slight waves - it's been soaked a lot! 8) Paper is now prepped for india ink artwork or perhaps watercolor?
