Machines Are Writing Now: Conversational Experiences in the Age of GPT

About our event With the release of Open AI's ChatGPT on November 20, 2022, Large Language Models (LLMs) have taken center stage in conversations about the opportunities and risks that artificial intelligence brings. ChatGPT set a record for "the fastest-growing user base in history for a consumer application" by gaining over 1 million users in just 5 days, arguably thanks to its user-friendly conversational interface. This presentation provides context and understanding of Large Language Models at a high level from a designer's perspective: What are the principles and best practices of conversation design? What is ChatGPT, and how does it work? What is a Large Language Model (LLM)? How are LLMs similar or different from chatbots of the past? What are the opportunities and risks of LLMs? We'll explore the changing landscape through interactive walk-throughs of tools like Watson Assistant, ChatGPT, Midjourney, and Voiceflow. About our speaker, Jason James (he/him) 👋 Hi! I’m a designer of conversations (CxD), user experiences (UX), and services (SD). I made my way to design after asking “How?” and “Why?” of society (BA, History) and business (MBA, Sustainability). User-centered design (UCD) is an opportunity to solve problems for people, especially in the industries, institutions, and systems that shape our lives, like banking and tech. I find joy in tinkering. I learn best when building from scratch, which often yields better questions and deeper understanding. I find joy in the community. I believe that how you build with others is as important as the end result. My best lessons about pragmatic collaboration come from my previous life as a commercial construction manager. Actually, no. Probably my marriage. Yeah. Definitely my marriage. I prioritize spending time and energy with my brilliant wife and two boys.
