The Nissan Leaf’s driving range now starts at 150 miles per charge, and the new Leaf Plus trims pack a bigger battery and more powerful motors, pumping that total figure up to 226 total miles between electric fill-ups. But its field of competitors has also thickened, and now the Leaf’s 150-mile range (more than double what the little bug-eyed EV offered in 2011) pales in comparison to that of cars like the Chevrolet Bolt and Hyundai Kona EV. So Nissan has introduced a group of new trims for the Leaf. Named the Plus, these trims bump up the Leaf’s driving range… and its price tag. Their $5,500 price premium buys you the improved battery and motors first and foremost, but shoppers will also enjoy the upgraded 8-inch touchscreen and over-the-air software updates. Inside, the Leaf offers reasonable space, with 23.6 cubic feet of storage behind the rear seats. Unfortunately, those seats don’t fold completely flat, meaning that total cargo capacity maxes out at 30 cubes. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are both offered on all trims except the lowly S, but we were dismayed to find only 1 USB port in our test car. Nissan ProPilot comes standard on all but the base S (again) and gives the car some low-level autonomous driving ability. Prices start at $29,990 for the Leaf S FWD and rise to the SL Plus FWD’s MSRP of $42,550.
