Military songs in music Military song Monsieur de Turenne The melody is attributed to the famous French composer Jean-Baptiste Lully himself. This warlike and lively song was said to have been composed to accompany the regiment of Viscount Turenne, whose full name was Henri de la Tour d'Auvergne-Bouillon, during its long marches. Turenne was one of the most combative soldiers of his time and saw many European battlefields during the Thirty Years' War and the wars of Louis XIV. It was this long experience and his talent that made him the Marshal General of the King's armies. A now little-known personality, he was one of the best generals of Kings Louis XIII and Louis XIV. A warrior from the cradle to the grave, he fell on the field of honor at the Battle of Salzbach on July 17, 1675, carried off by a cannonball. All the great generals of Europe, including his adversaries, saluted with respect the departure of this great soldier. The Sun King even granted this man the ultimate honor of being buried alongside the Sovereigns of France in the Basilica of Saint-Denis. Subsequently, the tune was taken up and completed several times until the 19th century when the current lyrics were written by Léon Durocher (1862-1918), a singer, poet and editor-in-chief of Breton magazines with an identity and regionalist vocation. This is also a very nice aspect of this music since through the lyrics it is a real tribute that is offered to the different local cultures dotting the Kingdom of France, from Provence to Brittany via Normandy or Alsace.
