Hi, this is Dr. Kirk Lozada, I'm a facial plastic surgeon and rhinoplasty specialist at Penn Medicine Becker ENT, and this is Two Minute Consults. Lip lift is a very different procedure from lip filler. When you're performing lip filler we can only add volume to the red portions of the lip, and unfortunately for a lot of patients when they have less red lip show or it's really being pushed on the inside you really have a limited ability to give them more full and plump lips. Therefore, for these patients that have a lot of pushing down or in of the red lip a lip lift can be a very effective procedure, so it can give you more plump rejuvenated lips without using filler. Immediately after lip lift surgery you're going to have some small sutures around the base of the nose where the incision is and your upper lip is going to be swollen for a couple of days. This swelling does subside over time, and around a week after surgery you're going to have those small sutures at the base of the nose removed. The most important thing at this point is to allow the swelling from the upper lip to go away over time, as well as to allow that scar to heal. Any scar is usually red and a little bit raised in the immediate days to weeks after the surgery. However, this can be effectively camouflaged with coverup, and then afterwards if the scar still needs some additional treatment we can do things like laser or chemical peels to kind of improve the appearance of the scar so that it hides the most effective way possible. An upper lip lift surgery can be effectively done in the office under local anesthesia, and it is something that is very well tolerated by patients.
