Bird Friendly. A term associated with Shade-Grown coffee, which describes coffee grown under a shade canopy. Arabica coffee is traditionally grown in shade in many regions, including parts of Mexico, Central America, Colombia, Peru, and Venezuela, as well as other parts of the world such as India, Indonesia, and Africa. In some places, however, Arabica coffee is grown in full sun or near full sun. The importance of maintaining shade canopies to provide habitat for migrating songbirds in Central America has led to a campaign by researchers at the Smithsonian Institute to define “shade-grown” in narrow terms, referring to coffee grown under a canopy of mixed native trees, and label it as “bird friendly.” Some farmers object to this concept, especially those using non-native trees or those maintaining forest reserves on their land. Nonetheless, shade-grown coffee is generally considered more environmentally friendly than sun-grown coffee, and the traditional varieties of Arabica, such as Bourbon and Typica, are best grown in shade, especially in Central America.
