WELCOME TO THE 5 MINUTE MARINER In this video Scott will talk about some study tips and tricks to help get you through the EOOW oral exam. Here is our list of complimentary Orals Questions. We have grouped them together into our different categories. (Class 4 Motor EOOW). These are by no means an exhaustive list of questions. But they will provide you a good test to check you level of understanding. 1. Watchkeeping Explain how you would take over a watch as 3rd engineer. When you join a ship, what would be some of the first things you do as a new 3rd Engineer? During your watch, you discover a fire in the purifier room, what would you do? Describe the vessel particulars (Power, length, weight, size) of your last vessel. 2. Auxiliary Systems Sketch the timing diagram for a typical two stroke engine. Describe the operation of lubrication oil system on a two stroke engine. Sketch and describe the bilge system on board your last vessel 3. Electrical Systems How would the emergency generator to start? What must you check before you parallel a generator? What would happen if you were to parallel a generator when the frequency of the incoming machine was 10Hz lower than the system frequency? 4. Maintenance procedures How would you go about replacing the bearing on a pump? How would you ensure that an electrical motor was safe to work on? What device would you use to prove a motor dead? 5. Pollution Prevention What is the name of the legislation that deals with pollution in the marine environment? What are the contents of the SOPEP locker? You are in the process of discharging sludge to shore when you notice a leak from a pipe into the water. What would you do? What is the ORB? When can you use the OWS and how would you start it? How far from shore must you be before you can use your Sewage plant? 6. Navel Architecture What is the free surface effect? Sketch a cross section of your last vessel. What is meant by buoyancy? 7. Fire Fighting What would you do if you discovered a fire in your cabin? What type of extinguisher would you use on a paper bin fire? Did you have a fixed fire fighting system onboard your last vessel? What was it? If you are onboard a ship with a CO2 system, who would give the command to activate it. Would you activate it if the fire in the engine room was bad? What is the purpose of the international shore side connection? 8. Life Saving Appliances How would you go about launching a lifeboat? What does EPIRB mean and how does it work? What is a hydrostatic release unit and how does it work? 9. Legislative Requirements. How does the MCA communicate information with the merchant navy? What are the types of M-notice and what type of information do they contain? What is SOLAS and who wrote it? Who wrote the Code of Safe Working Practice for Merchant Seafarers What are the requirements for your hours of rest while working on a vessel?
