2019 dubbed Year of the Vegan

(5 Feb 2019) LEADIN: 2019 has been declared the 'Year of the Vegan' by both Forbes and The Economist. More and more people are opting for vegan food for health, environmental and ethical reasons. Sales of vegan food are booming in shops and restaurants - and veganism is soaring to new heights on social media. STORYLINE: It's more than just a New Year's Resolution or Veganuary - it seems veganism is here to stay. Twitter claims the animal product free diet was its top food trend last month (January 2019) and that 54% of social media influencers now post about veganism. Now publications including Forbes and the Economist have declared 2019 the 'Year of the Vegan'. In the U'S. even the traditional take-away is picking up on the trend. Uber Eats, the home food delivery service, named 'plant-based' the top trend of 2018 in its end-of-year report. It says most of its popular dishes were plant-based orders and it predicts that vegan food will be the most popular pick for 2019. Christine Lusita, nutritionist and author of The Right Fit Formula says veganism is booming. "Forbes and The Economist and many other publications are saying that veganism is the most popular trend with over two billion in sales, with over 8% growth and 17% growth just in China. The drivers of the market are really health, sustainability and humanity.  People are moving away towards their fears and concerns over meat and moving over to a more healthy lifestyle that's plant-based." Tokaya Organica, an organic Mexican restaurant chain with outlets in California and Arizona is catering for the demand for high-end vegan food. It claims to be one of the fastest growing organic chains of its kind in the U.S. The Madera Group, which is behind it, is set to open 11 more restaurants in the U.S. and abroad by the end of 2019. It plans to open its first overseas location this year, with the debut of Toca Madera in Dubai. Tosh Berman, CEO and Co-Founder of The Madera Group and Tokaya Organica says the company wants to be at the forefront of the demand for vegan food. "The message of Tokaya is really a message of better living. Better living from a health perspective, better living on the impact that it creates in the environment, the ingredients that we put in our body. The center core focus is to create a company that sets a trend that establishes a different way of being, not just from profitability but really from a way that you culturally inspire the people inside a company and out." For many of today's consumers, highly 'grammable' foods, things that look good as much as taste good, are also pushing the trend. Berman says the plant-based popularity boom is due to the many creative minds that live here. "California, really is part of the trendsetting and kind of the taste-making aspect of the way that we create a lot of the hospitality components in the United States. One of the reasons behind that is because of social media. A lot of the big social media influencers, that are driving a lot of the information that people are receiving are really stemming from Southern California and the Southern California markets. For us, what we really saw as a big expansion program was: develop California and develop our footprint and then let all of that information seep out nationally." Eric Galen, a personal talent manager and Julia Rose, a social media creator, dine at Tokaya Organica regularly. Galen says it is an absolute must for him to eat healthily. Rose photographs and writes about healthy eating and food on her social media posts. She says her generation is all about food, knowing what it is and how it's prepared.
