Sand Pebbles; Thousand Cuts

From what I consider to be Steve McQueen's finest film, "The San Pebbles". In this scene, an angry mob of Chinese revolutionaries, runsdown one of the "coolies" that work on the U.S. gunboat, San Pablo. Determined to torture him with the "death of 1000" cuts, the crew of the ship looks on helplessly, as the captain refuses to do anything that might spark an incident (as if this wasn't one already). Unable to bear it, McQueen takes matters into his own hands, and comes to the mercy of his Chinese friend. I can hardly think of a more powerful scene from any film.
