Live recording at the Swiss Brass Band Championship, November 2025 World Premiere Performed by Brassband Bürgermusik Luzern Conducted by Michael Bach Program Note: Inspired by the monumental work of CERN—the European Organization for Nuclear Research based in Switzerland, and home to the world’s largest particle accelerator—Enginery of Genesis is a four-movement journey through the poetic and scientific forces at the heart of the universe. The piece reflects on the mystery and power of particle physics, not only in its raw energetic potential, but also in the immense human collaboration required to probe the origins of matter itself. 1. Fragmenting Stars The opening movement immerses the listener in an ambient, textural soundscape—like drifting through a cosmic cloud of stardust. Out of this celestial haze, a main theme begins to emerge, evolving gradually toward a powerful climax. This progression symbolizes the primordial forces of the universe, as if witnessing the birth of stars through sonic fragments. 2. Gathering Minds The second movement turns toward Earth, portraying the creation of CERN as a triumph of global cooperation. Musically, this is expressed through intricate polyphony and a dialogue between soloists, each voice representing a distinct intellect contributing to a common goal. As the movement unfolds, these independent lines converge into a unified, majestic chorale—celebrating the harmony of international scientific collaboration. 3. Computing Crashes Here, the focus shifts to the machine itself—the complexity, unpredictability, and sheer magnitude of the accelerator. Mechanically driven and rhythmically charged, the music becomes erratic and exhilarating. A wild, virtuosic trombone solo takes center stage, as if electrical circuits have rebelled and decided to party instead of compute. It's a chaotic, groove-infused tribute to the technological marvels—and occasional mayhem—within CERN's subterranean labyrinth. 4. Colliding Lights In the final movement, atoms collide with blinding intensity, releasing cascades of energy and illumination. The theme from the first movement reemerges, initially fragmented by the impact, but soon reassembled with renewed strength and clarity.
