The Rock defends the WWE Championship in the main event of WrestleMania XXIX against John Cena and CM Punk in a triple threat match. The roots of the high stakes championship match began on the 1000th episode of Monday Night Raw in July 2012, where Rock interrupted a spat between Punk (then-WWE Champion) and Daniel Bryan (now known in AEW under his real name Bryan Danielson). Rock gave an ominous warning that no matter who is the WWE Champion, he will challenge for the WWE Championship at the 2013 Royal Rumble event at the start of the next calendar year. Later that night, Cena (who was cashing in his Money in the Bank contract) defeated Punk via disqualification when Big Show attacked Cena; Punk kept the WWE Championship due to championships not being able to change hands via disqualification or countout. Rock saved Cena from Big Show, but was attacked by Punk in the process. Over six months later, at the 2013 Royal Rumble, Rock defeated Punk to win the WWE Championship for the first time in over a decade, his tenth world championship overall. Rock defeated Punk the following month at Elimination Chamber to retain the WWE Championship. On the February 25, 2013 edition of Raw, Punk defeated Cena (who had won the 2013 Royal Rumble match and chose to go after the WWE Championship) to replace the latter in the main event. The next week on Old School Raw, however, Cena defeated Punk in a lumberjack match to earn his main event spot back, thus making the WWE Championship match a triple threat match between Rock, Cena, and Punk at WrestleMania 29. On the March 11 Raw, the three men had a sit down forum moderated by Michael Cole; Cena pledged WrestleMania will be the completion of a redemption arc for himself, as he blamed Rock for sending both his professional and personal life on a never ending downhill since losing to him at the previous year’s WrestleMania event. Punk proclaimed Rock’s run as champion is a slap in the face of every full time competitor on the WWE roster. The three men engaged in a melee as tempers mounted, with Rock having the upper hand on Cena and Punk. The following week, Punk and Paul Heyman further insulted Rock, claiming ever since he stopped being a full time competitor, he never has a faithful person to the business, and only cares about the business when he finds a benefit to get out of it. On the March 25 Raw, the team of Punk, Dolph Ziggler, and Big E Langston defeated the team of Cena and Team Hell No (Bryan and Kane) in a six man tag team match, with Ziggler pinning Kane. On the final Raw before WrestleMania, Punk attacked Rock, only for Cena to save Rock and push back Punk’s assault. Unexpectedly, Cena hit Rock with an Attitude Adjustment, and grasped at the WWE Championship. Cena and Punk would be separated by WWE security as Rock recovered and watched on the chaos unraveling.
