Joël Chassériau « I transform the structure and design of typographic signs. These characters, which have been restructured, are reborn from insignia. » Joël Chasseriau is a plastic artist, graphic designer, engraver and a self-taught printing artist. He was born in 1950 in Vendée, France, and is currently living in Paris. “Nowadays, I don’t ask myself anymore questions, I just do what I need to do.” Chasseriau has been a graphic designer for more than 25 years. He connected with contemporary art when he visited the great workshops of today’s artists. He immersed himself in the artistic world of Robert Combas, Erró, Peter Klasen and Bernard Pras and began wanting to participate in this effervescent creativity by launching his own take on art. Geometry and instinct Chasseriau’s geometric work is almost created from and by itself. The artist begins instinctively by painting a coloured surface on the canvas, which then determines what comes next, and so it goes on until Chasseriau is completely satisfied. His material work and unique aesthetic sometimes echoes the work of Bauhaus, which initially inspired Chasseriau. Nevertheless, the painter does not intend to represent anything at all; he simply creates. A recognised artist Chasseriau’s work on geometric abstraction has led to numerous solo exhibitions in Europe (notably in France, Germany, Estonia, Belgium, Sweden and Denmark) as well as in Israel.
