1995 South Jersey Group III Championship. Mainland Regional High School (Linwood, NJ) beat Woodrow Wilson High School (Camden, NJ) at Woodrow Wilson High School in a huge upset, 42-14. It was Mainland's first championship since 1980. The game had an additional storyline leading up to kickoff. The week before in the Group III semi-finals, Mainland's star linebacker, Jason Cairns was unjustly ejected for fighting, meaning that he was ruled ineligible for the final. Since the NJSIAA did not have an appeal process, two local attorneys, Henry "Bud" Broome and Harry Franks sued the NJSIAA on Jason's behalf. They had their case heard on the Friday before the game, and they lost the trial. Then, they appealed the decision, and the case was heard that same night by Appellate Court Judge Michael King. However, since Judge King was the officiant at his clerk's wedding at the Atlantic City Country Club, the parties all went to the Country Club to have the trial was heard. Despite an angry bride wanting her officiant back and waiters serving hors d'oeuvres to the attorneys and witnesses in the middle of the hearing, the trial moved forward. At this hearing, Bud, Harry, and Jason beat the NJSIAA, marking the first time ever, after 455 such attempts, that someone had beaten the NJSIAA and won a court order allowing a player to play who previously had been ruled ineligible to play. On game day, Mainland's Coach Bob Coffey, with the injunction in hand and after receiving threats from the head of the NJSIAA to not play Jason, stood up for Jason and played him despite the threats. Mainland won the game and their first championship in 15 years. Game was played on December 9, 1995. Announcers are Chuck Betson and Ken Williams.
