In this episode we will be talking about re-usable packaging. This is packaging that even after initial use lives on for the same purpose or for a new purpose. This is different than renewable packaging which would require processing, with reusable packaging it is either sanitized and reused in the same industry or reused for a new purpose. There are several questions we need to ask ourselves when it comes to reusable packaging. The first question we need to ask is "How long will the item be reusable for?" Some packaging will degrade quickly over time while other materials will last considerably longer. If it is a biodegradable or compostable material for example it won’t last as long as something made from plastic. Of course we want to avoid non-sustainable packaging materials like plastic when possible. As more great biodegradable and compostable packaging options become available we should see less packaging that is non sustainable. Given the current landscape of packaging in the cannabis industry however, we need to find creative ways to reuse packaging that would otherwise become waste. The second question you should ask is "What is the beginning of life of the product?" Something that can be reused is appealing from a sustainability perspective. If the item was created in a very unsustainable way, it is considerably less eco-friendly... We need to be thinking about the environmental impact the product has when it is being created. When we are reusing packaging we will either utilize it for the same initial function or find creative ways to repurpose the packaging. Here are some examples! Same function: The product is sterilized and reused for the same purpose by individual consumers or in the same industry. Different function: Use a barrier bag as a flower pot. Store qtips, cotton balls, and paper clips in flower jars. Here are some examples of ways to reuse common cannabis packaging! Flower jar Same function: Reuse for flower or edibles. Different function: Use it for q-tips, cotton balls, hair ties, bobby pins or paper clips. Some jars could be used to grow spices in or to grow a succulent in which is actually something we did at Contempo! Check out our Instagram @contempospecialty if you want to check that out! Pop top tubes would be best for the same function but if you have any creative ideas let us know! In the mid 1900’s when Milkmen were still commonplace jars were often returned and reused. While there are certain sanitary concerns in doing this it would be a very sustainable practice for the cannabis industry to consider adopting. Milkman Model: Use the flower jar. Then it is sterilized and reused in the industry. This isn’t allowed in some places which is unfortunate but maybe we will see innovation in this field in the future. In a previous episode of the Cannabis Packaging Show we toured dispensaries across the United States. We toured dispensaries in Denver, Seattle and San Francisco. In San Francisco we met Danny who works at Sparc. She had an amazing idea to use flower bags to hang potted plants or to use for composting. Check out Sparc if you're ever in San Francisco! https://sparc.co Another extremely important thing to consider, beyond the sustainability benefits of reusing packaging, is the marketing potential of reusable packaging. People often ask if they can take home samples of our packaging at conventions. This is the reaction we are looking for! If you create beautiful packaging consumers want to reuse you essentially have a 24/7 billboard in their house. Every time the individual uses the product again your brand is front and center. We should be trying to conceptualize new packaging with the intent of consumers reusing it. How can you create packaging people WANT to reuse? The item of the week is our beautiful Mylar Bag! We want to know, would you reuse this product? How would you reuse it? How do you reuse your cannabis packaging in general? Let us know in the comments and you will be entered for the chance to win a Secret prize! Let's keep this discussion going, keep the ideas coming and let's solve this issue once and for all.
