As Schleswig-Holstein’s only full-fledged university, it serves a diverse student body of around 27,000 students, with its main campus located close to the city center and spread across multiple buildings. The campus around Leibnizstraße is particularly notable for housing several faculties, administrative offices, and the university's main library, all within a compact and accessible area. The CAU Kiel University Library is central to academic life, providing students and researchers access to extensive collections that include more than two million volumes, periodicals, and electronic resources. The library building, recently modernized, offers reading rooms, collaborative workspaces, and quiet study areas, catering to students’ varying study needs.
