Japan's New Problem: Zombie Tobacco

A new disturbing issue has emerged in Japan. A synthetic drug known as Zombie Tobacco, or etomidate, has begun spreading across the country. Originally used as a medical anesthetic and even as a sedative during death penalties in the United States, this substance has now become a recreational drug among Japanese youth. In Okinawa, hundreds of young people are already being caught with Zombie Tobacco every month, and experts fear that it will soon spread to Tokyo, where Toyoko youth and runaway teenagers in Shinjuku could accelerate its popularity. The rise of Zombie Tobacco in Japan comes on top of long-standing societal problems. For decades, Japan has struggled with hikikomori — people who shut themselves away in their rooms and refuse to engage with society. More recently, groups of runaway youth in Tokyo have gathered under the neon lights of Shinjuku, becoming known as Toyoko. Many of these vulnerable young people end up exploited, drawn into unstable lifestyles, and now they are increasingly turning to synthetic drugs like Zombie Tobacco. What makes Zombie Tobacco so dangerous are its terrifying effects. Inhaling etomidate through a vape shuts down the central nervous system, first causing a brief sense of euphoria before rapidly collapsing into convulsions, muscle spasms, and zombie-like movements. Victims often lose control of their bodies, stumble in the streets, or collapse unconscious. Overdose can cause respiratory depression, brain damage, or even death, making it as deadly as fentanyl. Japan’s strict stance on drugs has unintentionally fueled this crisis. Alcohol and cigarettes are accepted as everyday life, while all other substances are equally demonized. Because there is no nuanced understanding of which substances are mild and which are deadly, many young Japanese underestimate how lethal Zombie Tobacco is. The revolving door of synthetic substances — from banned CBD variants to sleep medications that left users with blue tongues — shows how quickly a new trend can spread among Japanese youth. The Zombie Tobacco problem in Japan is not just about one synthetic drug. It reflects a wider societal issue. With hikikomori retreating into isolation and runaway youth surviving on the streets of Shinjuku, many young people are desperate for an escape. Criminal organizations in China and the yakuza in Japan are exploiting this vulnerability, pushing synthetic substances like Zombie Tobacco into the market. Unless these deeper social problems are addressed, Japan may only be at the beginning of a much larger crisis.
