For Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children living in remote communities, there are few to no opportunities to engage with books written in their first language. That's why Pearson worked with the Indigenous Literacy Foundation to launch a reading APP developed in both Ngaanyatjarra and English language for the Playgroup at the remote Warbuton community in WA. The App is based on one of the world’s most popular books, Eric Hill’s classic story, WHERE’S SPOT? now in translation, WANYTJATJA SPOTNGA? It is a digital translation of the story incorporating the Indigenous first language, Ngaayatjarra, along with interactive content to engage children as young as one in reading . Watch children read and listen to the story in English as well as in their first language, which, research has proven is the one of the most significant factor in successfully learning to read and write. The App was developed by a team of Pearson and Penguin Random House volunteers as part of #projectliteracy. The aim is to help foster a love of reading, as well as the first steps towards digital literacy for both parents and children at the Warburton Play Group, and hopefully many more remote communites around Australia.
