This NYU Metro Center webinar introduces Freedom Dreaming, a term coined by historian Robin DG Kelley that reclaims radical imagination as a vital leadership skill, not a luxury. In today’s educational landscape, where urgency often overrides vision, Dreaming on the Clock offers a counterweight: a path to strategic clarity through creativity, collective insight, and purposeful planning. At the heart of this approach is a powerful question: How do we generate new possibilities when familiar approaches fall short of what our communities need? Rooted in the traditions of artistic practice, systems thinking, and cultural responsiveness, this session challenges the reactive rhythms of school leadership and invites participants to reimagine what is possible. You'll learn how teams can use collaborative freedom dreaming as a method for strategic planning, organizational design, and school-based innovation—even in contexts constrained by compliance, burnout, and scarcity. Participants will gain: A compelling introduction to freedom dreaming as a method for school transformation Practical facilitation techniques and design principles Case examples that bring this work to life in real-world settings A preview of the Institute for Healing and Belonging in Schools (IHBS) 2025 Summer Innovation Lab, a national convening for educatorsleading with creativity, rigor, and joy This webinar is ideal for educators, school leaders, and district teams who are ready to lead from a place of reflection, imagination, and research-informed strategy. Join us to explore how dreaming can build not just better schools—but braver, more resilient communities.
