So Dream just need to eat the black side. If Dream full of Negativity feelings. The apple could be turn into black. And if you guys wondering why dream half skull don't turn into black because Dream is guardian of Positivity so he have so many positivity inside of him. So Dream half skull only turn dark/goopy if he have negative feeling or when Nightmare around him. How the Negativity don't kill him? Simple, they actually kill him. That's why Dream can't turn into shattered for a long time. And if he turn into shattered, the negativity slowly corrupting his soul.
