For the first time in forty years, Portugal’s presidential election is heading to a run-off. Centre-left candidate António José Seguro of the Socialist Party will face far-right leader André Ventura of the Chega party in a second round of voting, after neither contender secured the required 50 percent in the first round held on February 8. The run-off is historic, marking the first time a far-right candidate has advanced to a presidential second round in Portugal. It also gives Ventura an opportunity to notch another breakthrough for Europe’s increasingly influential far-right movements. Throughout his campaign, Ventura has focused heavily on what he describes as “excessive immigration,” making migrants a central target of his political messaging. While Seguro remains the favourite to win, he now faces a challenging contest against the populist Chega leader. But who is André Ventura and why has his message resonated with so many voters?
