For private coaching via Skype, go to https://thestevenstanley.com/ Today we’re going to practice a couple more lax vowels, /ə/ as in “but,” “cut,” and “shut,” and /ʊ/, as in “look,” “shook,” and “cook.” The important thing to remember when you’re pronouncing these two vowels is to keep the muscles of your lips, tongue, and jaw relaxed. When pronouncing /ə/, we call this the neutral vowel, that means that your mouth isn’t round, it isn’t wide, it isn’t open, it isn’t shut. It’s right in the middle. It’s neutral. I like to call it “stupid position,” because it’s hard to look smart when you say /ə/. Right? Let’s practice some words with this sound. -- nut, mutt,, bun, fun, pun And now let’s practice some sentences: My lucky cousin comes to London on Monday. Mother’s number one customer is Russian. Now let’s practice the sound of /ʊ/. To say this sound, start with the /ə/ sound and then raise your [lower] jaw just a little and round your lips just a little. Look at how I make the difference between the two sounds. /ə/ /ʊ/ /ə/ /ʊ/ luck/look, tuck/took, putt/put Now let’s practice some more words with the /ʊ/ sound. cook, shook, push, butch, could, should, would Now be sure to keep your mouth relaxed. If your mouth is too tense and if your lips are too round, you’re going to end up saying “kook” instead of “cook” and “Luke” instead of “look.” So be careful about that. Now let’s practice some sentences with the sound of /ʊ/. Put more sugar in the cookies and the pudding. The butcher mistook the woman for the cook. Learning to distinguish between the sounds of /ə/ and /ʊ/ and pronouncing them correctly is an important step in learning how to pronounce it right.
