This is the remains of a family manor house from the 16th century. The family who lived here were Catholic at a time when it was illegal. They were all arrested along with two priests who were being hidden by the family. The two priests were hung drawn and quartered in Derby, the family were imprisoned. The gatehouse remains in tact and continues to have a chapel, in addition to a visitor centre. It’s a short visit, best if the weather is nice as a lot is outside and it’s a ten minute walk from Grindleford station. It belongs to the Catholic diocese of Hallam, and is managed by volunteers. In the summer it is open for 2 hours from 2-4.
