Historical WWII Reenactment 2020. My reenactment group left for a field event two days ago, portraying Norwegian volunteers in Skijeger Batalion “Norge” - in Finland 1943/44. They were on a five day reconnaissance patrol, far out in the wilderness. I knew the details of the mission, and roughly where they would be patrolling - but with a head start of 2 - 3 days, finding them was not going to be easy - and they did not know that I was coming. My mission was to track down the patrol, which could be literally anywhere, and try to get as close as possible and try to surprise them. I arrived at the starting point at around 00:00, changed into uniform and was off into the woods at about 00:30. I followed the powerline into the woods for about 1-2 kilometers before i came to a small stream - from this point onwards i would be relying mostly on my original Finnish suunto compass to take me from point to point. The further i got into the forest it got darker and darker, the terrain got rougher and the forest more and more dense. I stopped for about 5 minutes every hour to rest and hydrate. If the guys had stuck to their mission, I would at least have a small chance of finding them. The target area was roughly 10 kilometers into the forest, but due to the impassable terrain it was probably more like 15 - 20 kilometers. At around 06:00 in the morning i reached the lake were the patrol was to establish a forward operating base to scout the area.
