Presider: Fr. Mark Payne Parish: Chaplain, Heart of the Nation TEXT FROM THE GOSPEL AND HOMILY The Lord be with you. And with your spirit. A reading from the holy gospel according to Luke. Glory to you o Lord. The people were filled with expectation, and all were asking in their hearts whether john might be the Christ. John answered them all saying, “I'm baptizing you with water, but one mightier than I is coming I am not worthy to loosen the thongs of his sandals. He will baptize you with the holy spirit and fire." After all the people had been baptized and Jesus also had been baptized and was praying heaven was opened and the holy spirit descended upon him in bodily form like a dove. And a voice came from heaven, "You are my beloved son; with you I am well pleased." The gospel of the Lord. Praise to you Lord Jesus Christ. I believe that for most of us we don't have a real recognition of our own baptisms but we realize that we were baptized, unless of course you went through the RCIA program and you were baptized as an adult. Baptism is a very special moment in which we become a part of the community and original sin is washed away. John keeps calling us to a deepening of our relationship with God by saying, we need to repent, recognize that we have harmed relationships around us and we've harmed our relationship with God. And he always wants us to give God that attention by recognizing we need to always bond with the Lord God. Bond with our God by recognizing that we have sinned. And that's the first step. Second step is Jesus then gives us an example of prayer. Luke's gospel, I want you to be aware, Luke's gospel calls us to a deep relationship through prayer. So many of the gospel stories will have Jesus calling us to an out of the way place to pray. Jesus is praying. Jesus is praying in certain places. You'll find that Jesus prays a lot in Luke's gospel. And that is our guide. We need to pray in order to really develop that bond and to recognize that I need to repent and that I’ve wronged others and I’ve wronged God, I need to pray. And it's in that prayer of recognition that I finally come and realize, yes, Lord, I'm a sinful person and I need healing. That's why when john says, one mightier than I is coming after me who will baptize you with the holy spirit and fire, it's through that holy spirit that I come to a deepening and an understanding, yes, I have wronged people and I need to be forgiven and I need to forgive. That's our call as we begin our journey with Jesus. Jesus begins his mission now after his baptism. We begin our mission to continually grow deeper in our relationship with God, recognize that we need to develop that prayer life, constantly, daily, and I'm going to give you one insight and I want all of you to recognize prayer sometimes is that we are petitioning God, we're turning to God, we're expressing everything. I want all of us to focus on this: be quiet. That's right. Instead of always petitioning be in your prayer spot, be in church and just remain quiet. Because we need to allow God to speak to us. Sometimes we're talking too much. Sometimes we're asking too much. Sometimes we're not even giving God a chance to even respond. Be quiet. Sometimes when we're sitting in our chair, or whether we're at home, and you want to pray the rosary put the rosary down. Put your favorite prayer book down. And these are the words, speak Lord your servant is listening. And allow God to speak to us. That will deepen our prayer lives. That will deepen us. And you know something? Then God will say to each and every one of us, behold my beloved, I am well pleased with you.
