A masterpiece of neo-Gothic style, the John Rylands Library first opened its doors to public readers on 1 January 1900. The library was founded by Enriqueta Rylands in memory of her husband, John Rylands, and was built as a gift to Manchester. Home to one of the most remarkable university special collections in the world. With a collection of over 1.4 million items, in more than 50 languages, the John Rylands Library has a large collection of rare books, maps, archives, works of art and objects. The impressive collection includes the St John Fragment, a scrap of papyrus that is thought to be the earliest piece of any New Testament writing in existence. Other treasures held in the extensive collection – which spans five millennia – include the letters of local author Elizabeth Gaskell.
