Beyond the Blue: Exploring the Deep Waters of Papahānaumokuākea

In April and May, scientists aboard the NOAA Ship Okeanos Explorer embarked on a 28-day expedition to explore the deep waters of Papahānaumokuākea in the Pacific Islands region. Through remotely operated vehicle (ROV) dives and high-resolution mapping operations, the team surveyed seamounts, coral and sponge habitats, maritime heritage sites, and vast stretches of seafloor deeper than 200 meters. These missions help expand our understanding of one of the most remote and ecologically significant marine regions on Earth. Papahānaumokuākea, named for the ancestral union of Papahānaumoku and Wākea in Hawaiian tradition, represents both extraordinary natural beauty and critical scientific importance.
